Good Friday - April 10

Isaiah 52:13-53 Psalms 31:2,6,12-17, 25 Hebrews 4:14-16,5:7-9 John 18:1-19,42

For this reflection we asked the seventh grade class of Visitation, under the direction of teacher Kaitylyn Chichuk, to help partake in a unique assignment…

A note from Kaitlyn Chichuk, Seventh-grade Religion Teacher: The seventh-grade class spent time praying with today’s responsorial psalm. Below are five of those reflections.

“You know that feeling? Everything is going wrong and everything you do seems to make it worse. You think no one feels as bad as you do, and no one will ever understand. We feel alone. However, on Good Friday we remember that Jesus lived on Earth just like we do. He felt the judgement from others, the shame, and the humiliation. He knew what it felt like to not fit in. But Jesus kept his faith in God. He showed us we can’t forget our relationship with God will save us from the times when Satan tempts us with giving up and giving in to that awful feeling.”
– Rebecca McGannon

“When I read this psalm, the verse that sticks out to me is, “I am like a dish that is broken.” When I hear these words, I think about how sometimes we feel broken and forgotten. When I feel like this, I pray and remember that Jesus probably felt the same way when he was nailed to the cross. Like Jesus, we can all turn to God when we need Him.”
– Miller Wacht

“Almost everybody at some point feels like they have no friends or feel like they are just useless in this world. “I am like a dish that is broken” says that sometimes people feel worthless. Do you think Jesus felt like he was worthless when he was getting nailed to the cross? I think he did. He didn’t
let that get to him. He forgave the people that made him feel worthless or like a broken dish.”
– Blake Hartner

“This psalm opened my eyes. It showed me that even though we may not be seen as much in the eyes of our friends or the people around us, God will always see us. He created us. God sees us as a gift. We should realize that God will be there for us. This psalm shows us traits of Christ when it says,
“In you, O Lord, I take refuge.” This psalm is telling us to trust in our creator, as Jesus really trusted in his father; for God is the one who has planned out your life and knows what is right for you.”
– Brady Batz

“Every day there are lots of little things that get us down and degrade us. That judgmental look from a neighbor or critical comment from a peer can hurt, even if it wasn’t intentional. Sometimes we get so swallowed up in our own pain we forget that we aren’t alone. God is always there. He is listening.
He loves us more than we could ever know. When we are feeling down, we need to clear out all of our hurt and pain and give it to God. Think of it as cleaning out a closet. The task may be difficult, but the end result makes us happy. When the shelves are clean, we can fill them with better things.”
– Chloe Denk

Q: How does your faith in Jesus Chirst, who is fully human, help you understand your own humanity better?
